Pepper is one of the oldest and most commonly used spices on the planet. It is native to India and has been known to Indian cooking since at least 2000 BCE. Today, Vietnam is the worlds largest producers and exporters of pepper.

Spices of almost any variety have some type of medeical use that goes along with their great taste. Crushed garlic has antibacterial properties. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory characteristics. Basil has been used as a medicinal plant in treatment of headaches, coughs, diarrhea, constipation, warts, worms, and kidney malfunctions.

Paprika is spice made from the pods of capsicum annum, an annual shrub belonging to the nightshade family solanaceae and a native to the western hemisphere including Mexico, Central America, South America and West Indies. It range from sweet to spicy and flavors vary from country to country. It is used as a special ingredient in various dishes throughout the world.

Saffron is recognized to have some medicinal properties such as anti-spasmodic, diaphoretic, carminative and sedative. It is also used as herbal medicine for curing respiratory infections and disorders like cough, common cold, fever, stomach upsets, smallpox, and asthma.

Allspice is the only spice that is grown exclusively in the Western Hemisphere. The evergreen tree that produces the allspice berries is indigenous to the rainforests of South and Central America where it grows wild. Most allspice is produced in Jamaica, but some other sources for allspice include Guatemala, Honduras, as well as Mexico. Jamaican allspice is considered to be superior due to its higher oil content, which gives it a more appealing flavor.

Ajwain is very popular old spice used in different types of cuisines and highly valued for its medicinal uses. Different genres of medicines such as ayurveda and unani make an extensive use of this spice in medicines. Traditionally it is chewed raw to aid stomach ache or acidity. It is also added in many dishes to give aromatic and pungent taste.
